Alexander City – Benjamin Russell, chairman of the board at Russell Lands, Inc., has died.
Russell Lands announced his passing April 23.
Russell was a lifelong Alexander City resident whose work shaped Lake Martin and the surrounding area. He led Russell Lands for more than 50 years, turning a small company focused on cabin maintenance and timber into a business employing more than 900 people.
Russell became president of Russell Lands in 1970 when the company had just 15 employees. Under his leadership, the company grew to manage roughly 25,000 acres and 250 miles of shoreline around Lake Martin.
He developed waterfront communities and expanded the business to include Russell Marine, nine building supply stores and Willow Point Golf & Country Club. Russell Marine has been ranked globally by Boating Industry Magazine.
