More vendors, greater variety marks growth this season for the Sylacauga Farmers Market

Sylacauga – The new season of the Sylacauga Farmers Market has shown remarkable growth in both the number of vendors and the variety of things they offer shoppers every Friday from 7:00 to Noon.

We’ll details what’s available and what’s coming soon from the produce vendors, but there’s even more from what’s known as the “home cottage” sector. That would include flavored lemonade, homemade treats, baked goods, all sorts of popular snack items, farm-fresh eggs, jams, jellies, and sauces, along with plants, woodworking, all sorts of custom gift items.

This years market features several long-time participant growers, too. Pete Baker and his 4-Mile Farms crew are back. He’s got both ripe and green tomatoes, and they’ll only get tastier as summer progresses. 4-Mile also brings a variety of plums – green and ripe, potatoes – red and what Granny used to call ash potatoes. There’s bell peppers, cucumbers, and plenty of squash varieties, too. Pete’s sweet corn is great, but you’d better come out early at least until the full crop hits in a few weeks. On the way are okra and all sorts of melons in time for July 4th celebrations.

Another favorite has been bringing out the crowds for loads of fresh-picked Chilton County peaches for over a decade, along with tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and plums. The strawberries are about done, but they promise melons, okra, peas, and corn in the coming weeks. I got some of their green beans and they were fabulous, and they’ll have even more soon, as well.
