Eight road projects totaling more that $300 million are underway in Central Alabama

Birmingham – Eight road projects totaling more than $300 million are underway to improve roadways across central Alabama. ALDOT officials say that it’s all gonna be worth it when the projects are finished. You’ll be able to get through those corridors a lot more quickly and efficiently.

The widening of I-59 in Trussville is expected to be completed by early fall this year, with all three lanes north and southbound. The Highway 280 widening and resurfacing project is also scheduled for completion this fall. The highway is scheduled to be closed again next weekend at Pumphouse Road. That will lead to three turn lanes to get onto 459 South and three through lanes to get over 459.

Three separate projects widening I-65 from Alabaster to Calera in Shelby County will accommodate more drivers. Construction is scheduled to wrap in early 2028. The north section is a little more complicated, involving the building of bridges over railroads.

Looking a bit farther ahead, projects expected to begin in 2027 include new auxiliary lanes and replacing concrete on Highway 459, as well as widening I-59 from Hueytown to Fairfield. That project is expected to up to two years because of the replacement of four bridges on the interstate.
