Championship basketball coach is moving from Jasper to a new job at Pell City

Pell City – Blake Laney will be the new girls head basketball coach at Pell City, leaving behind a Jasper program that he built into a champion. Laney’s teams won 152 games at Jasper, leading the Vikings to their only state championship with a Class 5A title in 2024.

A Rainsville native and University of Alabama graduate, Laney coached both the boys and girls at Oakman after his graduation from UA. He did the same for three years at Ider before going to Jasper in 2012 and became the girls head coach seven years ago.

Laney’s wife, Holly, is principal at Helena Elementary, and the couple has two boys – 10-year-old Boston and 7-year-old Colsen. The Laneys live in Hoover. Laney said he was swayed by local investment in Pell City schools, where he says, the sky is the limit for what can be achieved in all sports.
