Alabaster police officer honored for saving life of retired Shelby County Deputy Sergeant

Alabaster – The Alabaster Police Department joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office onThursday evening to recognize and honor an officer who helped save a man’s life.

Alabaster Police Officer Ian Hart was driving home after the end of his shift, when he came up on a serious traffic crash, stopped at the scene and radioed for help. He found a victim of the crash on the ground suffering serious injuries.

Hart acted quickly, applying two tourniquets to the patient. Fire and Rescue personnel said if Hart had not been there to do that, the patient would have died. That victim is not only alive and recovering in the hospital, he is one of Shelby County’s retired sergeants.

Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego says Officer Hart is credited with saving his life. He said even though the accident will have a life-altering impact on the retired sergeant, he is alive because of Hart’s actions.
